GILLNET BAN EXTENDED, BUT FOR HOW LONG?

The Mexican Government has announced an extension of the 2-year ban on gillnets in the northern Gulf of California, but it is not clear whether this will be the indefinite ban that has been unanimously recommended by conservationists and scientists, or just a short-term 'band-aid' on the problem of vaquita entanglement in gillnets.  We need to keep pushing for a long-term and fully-enforced gillnet ban in the vaquita's range, along with an effective and equitable compensation plan to help fishermen to switch from using gillnets to more selective and environmentally-friendly fishing gear.
